In science fiction films and games, the holistic design of a fictional world is an essential part of the authenticity of the narrative. Worldbuilding describes this design process, which ranges from flora and fauna to life forms, physical laws, scientific achievements and economic characteristics. Good worldbuilding is a catalyst for the successful narrative of the format. It enables the complexity necessary to arouse the desired emotions in the viewer.
With worldbuilding, the goal for the designer is to create a coherent visual world from a verbal storyline. The first step towards this coherence is the formulation of a style guide in order to visualize the key scenes of the plot in so-called production paintings in a second step.
The task on day 04 of the workshop was to interpret the plot of the short story "Despina" from Italo Calvino's "The Invisible Cities", develop a style guide and collage the three key scenes. The use of AI-based tools to generate images of individual components of the collage was highly appreciated.
