XR
XR = »extended reality«
Extended reality is an umbrella term for various immersive technologies, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR). These hybrid technologies combine the virtual and physical worlds. They offer new experiences through interaction with digital information and, in some cases, the visualization of this content in physical space.
With virtual reality, the user is transported alone into a virtual world - alone among avatars. For a "good experience", the user is ideally largely isolated from their physical surroundings and the people present: increased social isolation as a core aspect of the medium.
For finster3000, however, the collective experience is always at the center. Digital features and content must contribute to creating new collective experiences - not to exclude other users from them. Augmented reality is inherently a medium for social interaction: it can enrich social media and communication platforms by enabling users to interact with each other in semi-virtual environments. And it can add one or more layers of meaning to the physical environment by integrating real objects into a digital game logic.
